Expressions of interest sought for roles on the AoP Executive Committee (ExCom) Member
In March 2022 a number of serving officers will reach the end of their tenure on the AoP Executive Committee (ExCom), Professors:

Rebecca Fitzgerald, Gastroenterology – East / North East inc. Cambridge
Julian Knight, Genomics – South West & Wales inc. Oxford
Cecilia O’Kane, Respiratory – Ireland (North / South)
Alan Irvine, Dermatology – Ireland (North / South)
We would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment over the years, and we hope they will continue to serve the Association through the work of our sub-committees.
Professor Julian Knight will be proposed to the Membership at the next AGM to serve in the role of Honorary Secretary and Professor Alan Irvine has offered to remain on the Committee for one further year – unless contested. Expressions of Interest are requested from members of the Association for five new members to serve the AoP ExCom and work alongside the remaining members.
Whilst maintaining a wide geographic reach, the AoP is committed to achieving a gender balanced committee.

The Association of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland (AoP) is a registered charity and the home of interdisciplinary translational medicine, inviting collaboration and debate and joining physicians with scientists at the cutting edge of research.

Engage To raise the profile of interdisciplinary translational research in the scientific and public communities, nationally and internationally.
Develop To support the development of translational researchers working for the benefit of patients with an emphasis on the needs of early career researchers
Share To promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge between researchers from different professional disciplines to create a vibrant, diverse, interdisciplinary translational research community.
There is an ExCom that is representative of the Membership and meets at least four / five times a year. It considers and acts on current issues affecting the Association and l reports to a Board of Trustees. Fellows and Members (including international, non-clinical, industry and early career members) are eligible for election to the ExCom. Members of ExCom also sit on the Internal, External and Annual Meeting Programme Committees.
The ExCom supports, advises and guides the Trustee Board in developing policy, strategy and implementation and allows the Board to fulfil its legal, ethical, and statutory responsibilities. It is important that the two bodies work closely together to fulfil their responsibilities and there will therefore be an intentional overlap of membership to support this.
Executive Committee members serve for three years.

The Person/s & Terms of Reference
A role on the Executive Committee is open to all members of the Association and particularly those members who are interested in:
• Representing the membership in identifying strategic issues to be addressed including widening membership and fellowship, supporting clinical research careers, increasing attendance at and relevance of annual meeting, changes to grant funding from AoP, promoting interdisciplinary research amongst physicians and with other scientists, maintaining excellence in the activities for the Association.
• Joining either the internal or external affairs committee including playing a very proactive role in discussing and progressing new developments within the Association and with external partners, working with the President and Programme Organising Committee to identify key and timely interdisciplinary themes, speakers and symposium partners for the Association meeting, and seeking new Fellows of the highest calibre.
• Identifying and suggesting issues the membership face that require addressing.
A willingness to contribute time and energy is essential. The Executive Committee meets twice a year face to face in addition to around three teleconferences. Members will also be asked to attend and/or chair sub-committee meetings.
The Committee aims to be diverse and representative of the Membership and its geographic reach according to the following areas:
- Ireland (North/South)
- East/North East including Cambridge
- West/North West including Midlands
- South West and Wales including Oxford
- South/South East including London
Deadline for expressions of interest: Monday 10 January
Electronic voting will open: January
The results will be confirmed at the Business Meeting in March 2022
How to Express Interest
Interested members must submit their expression of interest by email including a:
• 2-page CV highlighting research expertise as well as previous organisational experience including work with Early Career Researchers.
• short personal statement of intent which will be made available to the electorate (no more than 300 words).
The CV and personal statement should be emailed no later than Monday 10 January to the AoP secretariat.

Remuneration / Expenses
Please note that the role is un-remunerated. Reasonable expenses are paid for costs associated with undertaking the role e.g. travel expenses to committee meetings.
