A Diverse and Dedicated Future: International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025
Marked annually for the past decade by UNESCO, ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ celebrates the passion, dedication, and achievements of women and girls across the world.
This year’s theme, “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” explores the crucial role of diversity and inclusion within the scientific community, challenging the historically marginalised representation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers.

While the breaking of barriers by pioneers such as Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin allowed their successors to tackle a once inaccessible sector, full acceptance and equality remained out of reach until the late 20th century. At this time, social, political, and educational reforms started to open doors for women and girls across the world, understanding and appreciating the differences that women face in the workplace.
We have seen mindsets steadily shift to become more accepting, but the gender gap within the sciences still exists with many talented women not receiving the necessary support and encouragement required to progress as they balance academic progress with other feminine realities.
At the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland (AoPGBI) we are honoured to be supporting an abundance of women within the different stages of their careers and as we mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the achievements of our members, and thank them for their continued support and contributions to clinical research.

The AoPGBI annual meetings host celebrations of the ongoing endeavours of women in science, distributing scientific grants and prestigious awards to members.
Through new diversity and inclusion initiatives being developed within the AoPGBI, to be launched at this year’s Annual Meeting in London, we hope to bring about actions that move towards bridging the gender gap. With a commitment to create an unprejudiced and unrestricted space for leadership and guidance for all, bringing expertise and experience from a variety of fields the AoP is looking for new ways to offer support that empowers those in science through leadership, mentorship, and recognition. We believe together, challenging biases and creating inclusive opportunities, will help to ensure the next generation of scientists have a platform to progress without barriers.
This year’s celebration is a reminder to continue pursuing a future where everyone has the chance to make their mark in STEM.
