AoP Membership Consultation – For Your Feedback

Dear Colleague,
 
In the last two years there have been many developments for the Association of Physicians and I am grateful for your support during this journey to an exciting new future. As you will be aware, some of the major changes include a new membership structure that is open for a wider membership and especially for early career researchers; a proposed fellowship scheme for members who made exceptional contributions to translational research; a wide range of activities in addition to our Annual Scientific Meeting including workshops and seminars; and partnership arrangements with leading learned societies and publishing houses.
 
Whilst these changes have been discussed extensively within the Executive Committee I am well aware that not every member had an opportunity to comment and share their thoughts with us. I am therefore writing to you today to invite you to review the attached documents and to provide specific but also more general comments about the future course of the Association.
 
Specifically, I ask you to review the proposal of an AoP Fellowship and changes to the Rules of Association including the establishment of a Board of Trustees. These are important changes and I would very much value your input.
 
Our Annual Scientific Meeting has always showcased some of the most excellent clinical research in Great Britain and Ireland. One of our named lectures is the Osler lecture and we decided to establish a new prize for the best original oral presentation: the Osler Prize. We would, however, also like to provide a prize for the best poster presentation and would be grateful for any suggestions of a name. The prize should be named after a leader in translational medicine who ideally has or had strong links to the AoP. Please feel free to also suggest other prizes – such prizes make our meeting even more attractive, especially for colleagues at earlier stages of their careers.

This link will also contain questions about the Fellowship scheme, changes of rules and Board of Trustees. Most importantly, it will contain an open comment box and I am particularly keen to hear your thoughts and suggestions here. Anything that can help us to make the AoP even stronger will be most appreciated but please also don’t shy away from critical comments. We value your viewpoint and feedback, which is crucial to the continued success of the AoP. Of course all responses will be anonymous.
 
The attached documents are brief and the survey will take around 5 minutes to complete. The survey will close on Monday 9 November so please submit your comments before then.

QJM Moving Online – Update us with your details!

Our Journal, QJM, An International Journal of Medicine publishes peer-reviewed articles on internal medicine, which promote medical science and practice. The journal accepts original papers, editorials, reviews, commentary papers to air controversial issues, and correspondence.

The Journal continues to be a very important source of income for the Association and for a long time a printed copy has been included as part of membership.

We recognise the way in which our members are accessing information is changing and we are seeing an increase in requests to access the Journal online. For readers the online version of a paper is considered the Version of Record and guarantees immediate access to the most current version of articles. Access to the latest content is via the advance access feature on the journal homepage and articles are available instantly on the day of publication rather than waiting for the printed version to be distributed.

In 2018 we announced that QJM would be moving online for members and in light of the anticipated downturn in QJM sales due to the impact of COVID-19 we feel it is prudent to manage our costs by now implementing this change.

Our information confirms that the majority of the Membership already access the Journal online and we therefore do not anticipate that this will negatively impact your enjoyment.

Printed copies of QJM will be withdrawn from distribution in December. We ask you to reply to this message with the email address that you would like us to register with QJM for your online access.

To ensure inclusivity we invite our long-standing members to inform us if they would prefer to continue to receive a printed copy but kindly ask for your careful consideration before requesting this.

Grant Schemes Open for Applications

As part of our long-standing charitable mission to support groundbreaking medical research, we offer a range of grants. Application rounds are now open for:

Links with Developing CountriesRound Closes 1 November 2020

The main aim of the scheme is to establish links with developing centres abroad, chiefly aiming at specific research projects. The links will be associated with education and training of staff, medical and/or non-medical.

The principles for the scheme, to support individual grants of up to £10,000 are set out in the guidelines.Young Investigator AwardRound Closes 30 November 2020
These grants are designed to provide recently appointed investigators with flexible research funding of up to £20,000 to perform research into internal medicine

Summer StudentshipRound Closes 1 February 2021
These grants are designed to support undergraduate medical students interested in exploring a career in academic medicine gain experience in the research group of an AoP member. £1,500 will be provided for each award.

Expressions of interest sought for the role of Association of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland Executive Committee (ExCom) Member

In March 2021, Professors Menna Clatworthy (Renal – Cambridge); Andrew Godkin (Gastroenterology / Hepatology – Cardiff) and Robert Semple (Endocrinology & Diabetes -Edinburgh) come to the end of their tenure as AoP ExCom Members.

We would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment over the years, and wish them well.

Expressions of Interest are requested from members of the Association for three new members to serve the AoP ExCom and work alongside the remaining members:

AoP Mission

The Association of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland (AoP) is a registered charity and the home of interdisciplinary translational medicine, inviting collaboration and debate and joining physicians with scientists at the cutting edge of research.

We invite scholarship around a shared vision of the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, reaching new audiences, seeking out and promoting new ways of working and encouraging translational research leading to the advancement of internal medicine and direct benefits for patients.

The Opportunities

There is an ExCom that is representative of the Membership and meets at least four / five times a year. It considers and acts on current issues affecting the Association and subject to member approval in March, it will report to a Board of Trustees. Fellows and Members (including international, non-clinical, industry and early career members) are eligible for election to the ExCom. Members of ExCom also sit on the Internal, External and Annual Meeting Programme Committees.

Currently, all members of the Executive Committee are considered ‘Trustees’ of the Association and are therefore expected to comply with the legal obligations of the role as set out by the Charity Commission – please refer to the essential trustee guide for further information . A motion to form a smaller Trustee Board will be put to the Membership at its business meeting in March meaning that members of the Executive Committee would cease to be considered as ‘Trustees’.

Assuming the formation of a Trustee Board, the Executive Committee will support, advise and guide the Trustee Board in developing policy, strategy and implementation and allow the board to fulfil its legal, ethical, and statutory responsibilities. It is important that the two bodies work closely together to fulfil their responsibilities and there will therefore be an intentional overlap of membership to support this.

Executive Committee members serve for three years.

The Person/s & Terms of Reference

Whilst maintaining a wide geographic reach, the AoP is committed to achieving a gender balanced committee by 2021.

A role on the Executive Committee is open to all members of the Association and particularly those members who are interested in:


• Representing the membership in identifying strategic issues to be addressed including widening membership and fellowship, supporting clinical research careers, increasing attendance at and relevance of annual meeting, changes to grant funding from AoP, promoting interdisciplinary research amongst physicians and with other scientists, maintaining excellence in the activities for the Association.


• Joining either the internal or external affairs committee including  playing a very proactive role in discussing and progressing new developments within the Association and with external partners, working with the President and Programme Organising Committee to identify key and timely  interdisciplinary themes, speakers and symposium partners for the Association meeting, and seeking new Fellows of the highest calibre.


• Identifying and suggesting issues the membership face that require addressing.

 A willingness to contribute time and energy is essential. The Executive Committee meets twice a year face to face in addition to around three teleconferences. Members will also be asked to attend and/or chair sub-committee meetings.

The Committee aims to be diverse and representative of the Membership and its geographic reach according to the following areas:

  • Scotland
  • Ireland (North/South)
  • East/North East including Cambridge
  • West/North West including Midlands
  • South West and Wales including Oxford
  • South/South East including London

Timetable

Deadline for expressions of interest: Thursday 3 December
Electronic voting will open: December

The results will be confirmed at the Business Meeting in March 2021.

How to Express Interest

Interested members must submit their expression of interest by email including a:
• 2-page CV highlighting research expertise as well as previous organisational experience including work with Early Career Researchers.
• short personal statement of intent which will be made available to the electorate (no more than 300 words).

The CV and personal statement should be emailed no later than Thursday 3 December to the AoP secretariat.

Webinar: Successful Remote Interviewing – Watch online

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on our meeting culture. This also applies to interview situations, including those for PhD studentships, research fellowships and NHS and academic appointments. Early career researchers are particularly affected by this and face the unusual situation of online interviews and remote panel meetings.

The Association of Physicians delivered a webinar on Successful Remote Interviewing on 30th June 2020. This interactive event focused on three key points of successful interviewing: beginning strongly; excelling throughout; and finishing well. The webinar addressed techniques that will also help in conventional interviews and highlighted the specific challenges and opportunities of remote interviews.

In response to COVID-19 and its ongoing impact on our lives and work, we’ve taken the decision to postpone our annual conference to March 2021. 

Our focus on interdisciplinary medicine has never been more vital. As this complex health challenge evolves over the next few weeks and months, we will continue to foster information exchange and scientific collaboration at the highest levels and will remain at the heart of a crucial and multi-faceted conversation with researchers, clinicians and practitioners in the UK and worldwide.

Statement re. the Annual Meeting of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland (APAM 2020) and COVID-19

APAM 2020 Moving to 16 & 17 March 2021

The decision has been taken today to postpone the 2020 Meeting due to the evolving issues around COVID-19.

Instead, we will hold the Meeting Programme on 16 & 17 March 2021, at the same Venue in Oxford. We will shortly be contacting all members, abstract presenters and registered delegates.

We apologise for any inconvenience this decision causes and we look forward to seeing you in 2021 in Oxford.

Call for Nominations from members of the Association to serve the Executive Committee

Nominations are requested from members of the Association to serve the Executive Committee.

The Opportunities

Following a governance review in 2019, the AoP seeks to strengthen its Executive Committee to support the Association as it continues its exciting development.

Currently, all members of the Executive Committee are considered ‘Trustees’ of the Association and are therefore expected to comply with the legal obligations of the role as set out by the Charity Commission – please refer to the essential trustee guide for further information . The AoP President and President-elect serve for 1 year, and the Secretary, Treasurer and members of the Executive Committee serve for 3 years.
