Women of the AoP
Women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, and their work is often not recognised.
Women make up only 33.3% of researchers globally, and less than 4% of Nobel Prizes in science have been awarded to women. In Europe, only 11% of senior research roles are held by women.
To date the AoP, as with industry generally, lacks in diversity and with an under-representation of women documented.
The AoP through a recent project has identified the need to engage and attract more members and reduce the gender gap within its own membership.
The establishment of Women of the AoPGBI is not only to address an issue for the AoP but to also create a programme of activity and actions which can help attract more women into the world of science.
The AoP believes that with support of its members and industry they can make some positive changes and impact within the clinical research world for women and other groups.
What is the Women of the AoPGBI (WAoP)
An initiative to promote diversity within the clinical research world, with an initial focus on addressing the gender gap.
The initiative aims to increase visibility and representation for women, recognising their unique perspectives and skills and together create a programme of actions for progression and change.
Women of the AoPGBI objectives
● The initiative aims to provide a means to open a conversation around underrepresentation of groups in the sciences, with the support of the wider research community.
● Create mechanisms to share experiences of the challenges which are unique to women in the world of clinical research.
● Create a programme of tangible actions that can drive changes and bring conversations to the forefront in the wider medical research community.
● Create opportunities and platforms where the achievements of women are highlighted and celebrated.
● Create an open and secure space to encourage and support women in medical research.
● Establish a longer lasting and far-reaching forum and network with hosting of events such as forums and networking opportunities.
● Offer a support network and mechanism for both experienced and aspiring women in science.
● Longer term goal to create a network which is seen as the go-to-voice of women within the medical research world.
● To open the conversation around diversity gaps and create wider reaching support networks.
Who can join?
● The AoP invites existing members to join regardless of gender who wish to support or utilise the initiative.
● Long term aim to open the group to the wider research community and commercial partners.

Women of the AoP inaugural meeting 2nd April 2025
There was much discussion around real actions the group could take forward. This was the first step to kick-start this initiative. We would like to open the invitation to all members and encourage more to be involved.
