“I am delighted to welcome you to Birmingham for the 2026 Association of Physicians of GB and Ireland’s Annual Meeting — a city with a rich legacy of medical breakthroughs, from the large-scale production of penicillin to pioneering advances in orthopaedics like the Birmingham Hip. This is a place where ideas have long changed lives. Our conference is set in the heart of the University of Birmingham, the first civic university in the UK established in 1900, built around accessibility and community engagement.

Our history forms our 2026 theme, “Enabling Talent, Inspiring Discovery”, creating  conditions for academic medicine to thrive — from the very first steps into research to leadership on the world stage. We’re proud to introduce two new prizes this year: the Medical Student Prize, celebrating early promise in academic medicine, and the Early Career Researcher Prize, recognising outstanding contributions from the next generation of clinical scientists.

The programme is packed with thought-provoking symposia hosted by leading academic centres, keynote talks from world-renowned scientists, and ECR-led sessions designed to showcase fresh perspectives. It’s an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and be inspired — whether you’re a medical student, a clinician-researcher, or an established academic leader.  Our conference is set in the heart of the University of Birmingham, the first civic university in the UK established in 1900, built around accessibility and community engagement.

And beyond the conference? Birmingham offers a warm welcome and plenty to explore: a dynamic cultural scene, historic canals, world-class museums, and one of the UK’s most diverse and exciting food cultures.  I look forward to seeing you all in Birmingham.”
